AFGRI Equipment Supporting Local Jobs Through Apprenticeships
AFGRI Equipment, the primary dealer of John Deere machinery and equipment in Western Australia, is reaffirming its dedication to rural communities by investing in local talent through its Apprentice Academy and other career-building initiatives. Since the program’s establishment in 2018, it has grown to become a foundation of the company’s efforts to nurture skills and create job opportunities across the state.
This month, AFGRI welcomed a new cohort of 43 apprentices and parts trainees with a comprehensive two-day induction program held at the Muresk Institute in Northam. The group, aged between 16 and 38, travelled from branches across Western Australia to embark on this new career journey.
Tim Stubenvoll, General Manager HR & OHS, highlighted the significance of the Academy, “Our Apprentice Academy is so important to AFGRI’s mission of providing premium equipment, service, and solutions to our customers across WA. Staffing is a challenge for any employer, especially in regional areas. By sourcing local talent and training them to the highest standards, we ensure we can continue to support our communities and customers. This program also creates opportunities for both young people starting their careers and mature-age individuals seeking a career change.”
During the induction, the new recruits were introduced to AFGRI’s history, core values, and operational scope, alongside lectures from AFGRI experts and technical advisors. Following the induction, the apprentices and trainees will join one of AFGRI’s 19 branches across WA, where they will gain hands-on experience while completing nationally recognised qualifications. Apprentices will undertake a four-year Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology, while parts trainees will pursue a two-year Certificate III in Automotive Sales with a focus on parts interpretation.
Tim Stubenvoll added, “We’re not just filling roles; we’re building careers and equipping our people with the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly complex and technology-driven industry. Thanks to John Deere’s considerable investment in technology, this group will gain expertise across a broader range of subject areas than ever before.”
Graeme Henderson, General Manager Branches and Aftermarket and AFGRI’s first Precision Ag Specialist, started off the proceedings with a presentation to the fresh apprentices and parts trainees. “Any of you, in 15 years, could be standing here. Don’t think you’re locked into doing only what you’re starting now. AFGRI is passionate about developing our staff, and there are always opportunities to grow and advance within the organisation.”
Graeme further explained the company’s approach to training, “We’re trying to give them as much practical experience and fault-finding experience as we can. The more technology evolves, the more of that specialist subject we’ll put into the academy,” he said. “We like to source local talent and local people - we’re very big on local communities and growing with those communities.”
Since its partnership with the Muresk Institute began in 2018, AFGRI’s training program has evolved to invite guest lectures who can go into some depth and specificity regarding technical aspects such as hydraulics, ensuring apprentices and trainees can extract the most value possible. Tim Stubenvoll said, “We’re proud to offer some of the best training in the industry, helping our employees perform at a high level in their roles and contribute to the success of their communities.”
Mr. Stubenvoll congratulated the new cohort of apprentices and parts trainees on this significant achievement, saying of the hundreds who apply each year, only a fraction makes it through to induction. “I hope you find your passion will grow along with your expertise,” he told the group.
AFGRI Equipment CEO, Wessel Oosthuizen, emphasised the broader community impact, “At AFGRI Equipment, we are committed to supporting rural communities by investing in local talent and ensuring that young people in these areas have access to career opportunities close to home. Our apprenticeship programs are a vital part of building a sustainable future for agriculture and construction industries across WA. The growth of these programs reflects not only our investment in skills but also our belief in the potential of our people.”
By focusing on developing skilled professionals, AFGRI Equipment is fostering career growth while ensuring the agricultural and construction sectors remain innovative and sustainable. The Apprentice Academy demonstrates AFGRI’s core values of integrity, teamwork, accountability, service excellence and passion - values that guide its commitment to employees and the communities it serves.
